What is Modelair-Tech?

Stik Models

Modelair-Tech is a leader in the design and manufacture of electric flying model products. Many years of mechanical design and CAD/CAM experience in the aerospace industry has found its way into the hobby of radio controlled electric model aircraft. Modelair-Tech's primary thrust was belt and gear drive RPM reduction units. Efficient, lightweight electric model designs (plans) and some kits are also in the product line. Light weight vacuum- formed parts are available for many of the designs. Modelair-Tech also specializes in "engineering" power systems for the novice at electric model flight.

Modelair-Tech is committed to the advancement of electric model aircraft flight technologies. To this end, we offer expert advice to the novice for just asking. Please e-mail us with your questions at tomhunt@optonline.net

Who is Modelair-Tech?

Tom Hunt Modelair-Tech was founded by Tom Hunt with ex-partner Bob Aberle, late in 1994 to expand the number of modelers flying electric powered aircraft. Tom, still an employee of Northrop Grumman Corporation as a Senior Engineering Specialist, has been designing, building and flying radio controlled models for almost 25 years. Tom has gone 100% electric for almost 6 years now. Tom has had many articles published in Model Aviation, Flying Models, and Model Airplane News magazines over the last 15 years. Tom has also acquired many places at the US National Championships in electric powered sailplane and old- timer events.

Bob Aberle Bob Aberle, Technical Editor of Flying models magazine for over 25 years, is a retiree of Grumman Aerospace since 1994. Bob has dozens of published model designs to his credit, both glow and electric powered. Bob's knowledge of the "who's" and "what's" of the radio controlled aircraft hobby, were instrumental at getting Modelair-Tech "off the ground". Bob has since left Modelair-tech to "retire" once again. Bob can still be found "helping out" Tom and his new partner, Eileen Hunt, at major trade shows and "fly-ins" across the United States.

Why fly electric?

Spitfire Electric flying models offer the hobbyist some rare advantages over fossil fuel ("slimers" we call them), infernal combustion engines!! First... they're quiet!! No more lost flying fields do to noise!! Second...... they're clean. No sloppy fuel oils to clean up after a days flying. Third..... the motors have a 99 and 44/100% start record.... no more fighting to get the airplane into the air with a balky IC engine that won't start!!!

Tom and Eileen Hunt at KRC '97 It is a fallacy that "electric" powered models have to weigh more (for the same size model) than the "glow" powered variety. If they are designed and built as an electric model from the start, often, electric models are lighter than a similar size glow powered model. Unfortunately, there are not many "made for electric" kits on the market. However, many glow powered models can be converted to electric power without major changes. In fact, some can be built stock right out of the box and electric power substitute for the "wet" fuel system. E-mail us for info on "good" electric conversion subjects for the sport and scale modeler. Electric flight is not just powered sailplanes anymore!! 1/4 scale Cubs, 1/5 scale warbirds, 10 1/2 ft. B-17's fly cleanly, quietly and more scale like with today's electric power! Come see what Modelair-Tech has to offer the sport and scale modeler.
